340B INDUSTRY LEADER SPOTLIGHT

Jason Atlas, Senior Vice President, Pharmacy Operations, Maxor National Pharmacy Services

Jason Atlas

Q: Where did you grow up?

Princeton NJ.  My father and his twin brother owned and operated an independent pharmacy for over 40 years, and obviously pharmacy runs in the family.

Q: Where did you go to college/graduate school?

I graduated from the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers University and then completed my Masters in Business Administration from the University of Colorado – Leeds School of Business.

Q: What are your favorites?

Food: Sushi

Movie: The Matrix series

Musicians: Steel Pulse, Rebelution, Dave Matthews Band

Destination: Ski Vacation

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

On any given weekend or holiday, I can be found skiing, mountain biking, hiking, paddleboarding, and finding ways to enjoy the outdoors with my family and two sons.

Q: What kind of work does your company do in 340B and what makes it stand out?

Maxor helps covered entities, hospitals, and health systems maximize their pharmacy’s value through a tech-enabled pharmacy care platform purpose-built to help clients regain control of patient care and the pharmacy premium dollar. Why I feel we stand out in the market is our experience, passion, and our ability for our customers to be the most efficient and best version of themselves.

Q: Why did you choose to work in the 340B space?

I had the opportunity to enter the 340B space in 2010 while working at one of the larger 340B safety net hospitals based in Denver CO.  I was immediately connected to the vision of the hospital that ensured that all patients, regardless of ability to pay, were provided optimized medical care and comprehensive pharmacy services.

Q: What do you feel is your most significant contribution to the 340B world or to a 340B customer/client?

I feel fortunate that I have been able to impact hundreds of 340B programs around the country and interact with thousands of 340B operators while working for Apexus, the federal prime vendor, as a policy expert and educator at 340B University and author of the 340B ACE program.  After my time with Apexus, I had the opportunity to further my impact on the 340B community. First, working as the Vice President of 340B Enterprise Strategy and Solutions at AmerisoureBergen, now Cencora. And now in my role as SVP, Pharmacy Operations at Maxor, where we are focused on helping our clients improve financial performance and ensure full 340B program compliance so they can deliver their mission in their communities.

Q: What advice do you have for a young professional who has recently launched a career in the 340B space?

First, spend time building your core understanding of the program by taking advantage of the resources available through the federal prime vendor, Apexus.  Start with 340B University OnDemand, attend a live session if you can, and then continue your journey by enrolling in the advanced 340B operations certificate.  Second, develop a network of other 340B experts that you can engage and ask questions.  I know many individuals in the space, and everyone is almost always willing to provide help, share their experience, and answer questions as the continued sustainability of the program is contingent upon covered entities maintaining compliance and working within the scope of the program. Third, realize in advance that you may receive the following answer to many of your 340B questions: “It depends.”  Don’t become frustrated but realize the complexity of the program justifies that answer until more information can be provided to obtain a more definitive answer.
